Give me some time, and I'll be the first VR distro.
You can install Ubuntu on a Nintendo switch btw. Why would you want this? Idk. Why would you want Ubuntu on anything? We suck.

girl help the Computer People interacting with my previous posts are ignoring the point I was trying to make and waxing poetic about their favorite open-source operating system setups
#technology#the point was that people who are Very Into Computers tend to use way more technical jargon than casual ordinary users can keep up with!#but of course Computer People fixated on the literal contents of the post I screencapped#and are critiquing that particular poster’s linux preferences 😭#mention OSS in front of five users and get seven detailed opinions#god bless

really my favorite thing about using Linux is that compared to like, Windows or MacOS, I just enjoy my time on the computer more with Linux. There's a lot of dumb bullshit I don't have to worry about, everything runs faster, I can make my interface look like it crawled out of 1997, and I don't have to turn the thing off to update it. It feels a bit cheesy to say that but using Windows just feels adversarial (which was the case even before I swapped to exclusively using Linux) and that's a sentiment I see from tons of people who exclusively run it.
#i haven't used macos in a long time cuz i only use it when i have to and i'm not a student anymore#so memory's not as fresh but macos is kindof like 'what if linux was closed source and also bad' imo#but that's a very technical evaluation of it (they are both nix) which isn't super relevant to the average mac user

The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Linux Workstations, a fantastic video on productive computing by No Boilerplate.
Creatives, gamers, and casual computer users alike: take a peek!
youtube
Full transcript available on GitHub.
Cute anecdote time: I switched my (somewhat tech savvy) 70-year-old grandparents over to Ubuntu Linux after the battery in their Windows 10 laptop died on them.
It’s been two years since the switch. I have received zero calls from them about software updates, strange behavior, or frustrating driver issues. They love it!
It took less than 45 minutes to back up their data, install Ubuntu on a new machine, and restore their files and applications. Add another 15 minutes of teaching them how to access settings and update software and… it’s done!
I believe most people could benefit from switching to Linux in noticeable, appreciable ways on a daily basis—not just in terms of performance, but productivity, ease of use, and peace of mind.
Gotta love free software!

I wonder if Half Life is so slow on my netbook because of Wine or because of the shitty GPU. It is slower on software rendering mode, but when in OpenGL mode it's not using 100% CPU.
#half life#wine#Linux#i am aware that there is a native linux version of HL#and i actually own it#but its the steam version#and theres no retail linux version#and steam doesnt support 32 bit computers#i mean it technically does#but no matter what it still tries to install 64 bit libraries and erroring out#so im playing the GOTY edition i found online

so I've been havin some problems w my pc, right? couldn't get it to boot, for the life of me I could not figure out the fuckin problem, so I took it to the local guy who fixes shit. I walk in w my build, he immediately knows it's a custom build. he asks who built it and I tell him that I did. for some reason, he then immediately offered me a job??

annoying to me that macOS by default hides the root directory from the user in finder. like i get that it's because most users never actually have to do anything with the root directory but come on man (<-complaining for no reason. it took like 0.02 seconds to pull up and pin the root directory to the sidebar in finder)
#i do question why the hell their file system explorer is called 'finder' though. like i don't think that's a very good name....#the good thing about having both linux & mac laptops is that transition is pretty seamless (at least for me) because they're both#unix-based machines (technically mac is Certified Unix while linux is unix-LIKE but it's a whole fucking thing i'm not getting into rn)#but i know some would argue that the transition is horrible because on linux everything is accessible and on mac you either abide#by apple's workflow or die. but for ME it's fine.#my mac is for school things i have to do that physically cannot be done on linux (i.e. test proctoring because they require either mac or#windows. nyeh nyeh whatever) and my linux laptop is for. Everything Else lmao#whatever i'm just rambling HAHA

being someone who uses Debian both professionally and at home is great because i spend 8 hours a day thinking about it in the most normal way possible whilst dealing with MySQL or whatever
and then i come home, boot up my Thinkpad, and am presented with posts like this on tumblr dot com
switching your computer to running on linux is a kind of forcefem
#one day i will fuck up and get those two contexts confused#like i'll write a technical document that claims the g in gcc stands for gender or something#or maybe it'll be the other way around and i'll write a tumblr post about docker-compose files#linux

Mirrorbent Year 11: We're So Back
*digs self out of a pile of blankets* 11 years… wheee
It's turned out that my predictions for when updates would resume were. way too optimistic, BUT! The good thing is that the hellthing is Finally Over, so for the foreseeable future we're back to the classic monthly schedule! And they should come along quite a bit faster, since now I've got a more powerful computer.
Expect the next update very soon!
#mirrorbent#mbannouncements#re: the computer: the reason there isnt a proper update for today is because i launched myself into gaming on linux the second i could orz#which meant Configuring Stuff (enrichment)#and also because after all these so many months i decided i didnt like the next panel's sketch anymore so i redid it and its going Very Fas#technically im waiting on a grade but the hellthing is Done and Finished and like. i should fucking Hope itd pass after so many months#anyway. mirrored bench time.
